Back in the 50s, the government was testing LSD's effects on people. This animation is made of nine drawings that an artist made while being administered LSD.

A very good book to read on the subject of psycho-active drugs is Intoxication by Ronald K. Siegel. I read an earlier edition than the one listed at Amazon, but it was very educational. For one thing, LSD experiments didn't end with Leary & Co. Siegel covers psychonauts at length (recreational acid eaters are useless for the task), and the trends in hallicinations as far as visual patterns go, even going so far as to interview Indians who use Peyote on a ritual basis and finding they see many of the same things.
He also boozes up elephants and gets chimps high on cocaine. And makes the case for legalization, though he backs away from calling for legalization in the edition I read.
