Above: Os Mutantes performing at Som Pop - TV Cultura (originally recorded at TV TUPI, 1969). Today I have a nice slice of Brasilian Psychedelic pop rock--Os Mutantes!
I grabbed all the audio from the aforementioned video (see below) and
cleaned up the sound. The sound is pretty good considering the recording is 36 years old and from (black and white) tv. The performances are great. This should get your week started on the right foot.

The TV intro is not the Shell commercial, it is an excerpt from "Dom Quixote" (studio recording). The announcer says: "In the early 70's, Mutantes were augmented by the bass player Liminha and drummer Ronaldo Leme, alias Dinho". In fact, Ronaldo had played in their records before, but not as an official member (though he did receive credit as a guest musician).
There is actually one shell jingle that the "mutantes" recorded. It´s called "algo mais" and all of should look after it, i bet that you will find it as the best jingle ever made in the world...
Pretty amazing stuff. All Mutantes albums were released again in march 2006 in Brazil, this time, digitally remastered. In the pack , there's also the first Rita Lee solo album, which is also a kind of a Mutantes album, since the production was done by Arnaldo (he was married to Rita), and he and Sergio also play and sing in it.
Rita Lee's first album was produced by Arnaldo and has Sergio playing on it, as well as Liminha and Dinho, it's true. But it's not really a Mutantes album in the strictest sense. But you do get about three songs that are pure Mutantes. I would say they are Calma, Eu Vou Me Salvar and Tempo Nublado.
Oficially, Liminha and Dinho became part of the band on the Jardim Eletrico album, 1971. While Dinho only didn't take part of the first album (the drummer was Dirceu who was in Gilberto Gil's band), Liminha was already playing live with them as early as 1969. His debut on albuns is their 1970 Divina Comedia. You can notice the diference between songs that have Arnaldo on bass, such as Ando Meio Desligado, and the ones that have Liminha, such as Quem Tem Medo de Brincar de Amor. Liminha kicks ass right from day one. The whole album (Divina Comedia), by the way, was recorded by the end of 1969.
Now Rita Lee's second album, Hoje E O Primeiro Dia Do Resto de Sua Vida is truely a Mutante album. In fact, it was recorded as such and only got released as a Rita Lee album because the record company refused to have two Mutantes album in one year (1972). Other versions claim that they intended to have the Baurets LP as a double album and where denied. Both albuns were released simultaneously in september of 1972. By that time Rita Lee was ready to leave the group (or was asked to leave) and did.
